Text & meaning

About this text

The refrain addresses Lakshmi affectionately as ‘our mother.’ The next lines imagine her arrival through the sound of anklets. This is a selected opening passage, not the complete composition.

Study notes

The refrain

ಬಾರಮ್ಮ (bārammā) joins ‘come’ with ಅಮ್ಮ (ammā, ‘mother’), an affectionate form of address to the goddess; it is not the usual polite invitation to a stranger.

Sound and movement

ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ (hejje) is a step and ಗೆಜ್ಜೆ (gejje) is an anklet. The near-rhyme turns Lakshmi’s approach into something listeners can almost hear.
