Text & meaning

About this text

This selection pairs the refrain with images from a later verse: Krishna’s conch and discus. The familiar Kannada imperative ಬಾರೊ means ‘come.’ Sung versions vary in spelling and verse order.

Study notes

Names as meaning

Yādava means a descendant of Yadu; Mādhava and Madhusūdana are other names for Krishna. The repeated names are direct addresses, not separate characters.

Two ways to say ‘come’

ನೀ ಬಾ (nī bā) is ‘you, come’; ಬಾರೊ (bāro) is an affectionate, familiar call. Use ಬನ್ನಿ (banni) instead when politely inviting someone in everyday conversation.
